Massachusetts plate series & format rules
Every documented plate series across the Reserved, Vanity, and Specialty passenger categories — with its plate number format, fixed prefix, and who can request it, all sourced and dated from the current RMV Passenger Plates Manual. A plate type is the broad category; a series is the specific plate (Red Sox, Cape & Island); a fixed prefix is printed for you; the suffix is the part you choose.

Specialty plates print a fixed prefix, so only the characters after it are up to you — Cape and Island's CP + NNNN reads as CP1234
